It all started with 39 button holes and a horrible older sister.
Hello, my name is Amanda and I am the artist behind Fauna Stitchery. While I have doodled, drawn, painted, and made a cachophony of childhood art, this is my first real foray into a more professional art world.
Let's rewind the clock back to oh, circa 2017 or so. I'd never done much hand sewing before but while making a 14th century kirtle (dress) my older sister handed me the nearly finished garment and said I needed to hand sew the 40 lacing holes. After 39 button holes she showed me how to do the last one on a sewing machine. While she laughed, she had no idea she'd unlocked a new passion.
I began researching 14th English embroidery. First I started with some trim on my sideless surcoat. Then the sleeves on my kirtle received some thread painting. In 2020 I began one of most impressive pieces - a bycocket hat covered all over in embroidery and powdered with pearls. It took me the whole of the pandemic, but it kept me going and when the world came out of the pandemic, I had an idea. I decided to open my own hand-embroidery business.
Fauna Stitchery (a name suggested by the same horrible AMAZING older sister who also helped me with this website) is how I hope to share my art with other people. All my pieces are hand-stitched and combine my two passions - embroidery and animals. Particularly fantasy animals. Growing up I spent most of my free time doodling dragons and now my real life allows me to work with real life little dragons. I work with animals - particularly lizards, birds, and other smaller fauna that help to inspire many of my favorite pieces.
